Episode 49: The Future of Collegiate Powerlifting ft. John Downing

Kevin hops on the mic this week with John Downing, head coach of the powerlifting team at The Ohio State University, to chat about the growth and future of collegiate powerlifting. John currently coaches 90 lifters on the OSU team, and was the coach of the first ever Men’s IPF College World Championship team in 2016. John himself formerly held the 83kg American Record in the Squat.

John is also the founder of Lift4Life, a non-profit organization that empowers marginalized communities through the sport of powerlifting as a low-cost accessible sport to build community and connect people around the world. Powerlifting is additionally utilized to address drug abuse as a drug free sport, foster women empowerment, provide employment opportunities, and so much more. The organization provides funding support for lifting equipment, as well as training and resource support for local coaches and athletes. All equipment is built locally to provide employment opportunities, and local lifters are empowered to take on projects to ensure sustainability.
